BOP Release Destinations
BOP confines sentenced federal prisoners and maintains a public locator for records from 1982 forward. It does not operate an institution in Monroe County. People tied to federal cases in the Keys may therefore appear at facilities elsewhere in the country, and county of arrest is not a BOP location filter.
A locator result marked released, with a past release date and no BOP facility, supports departure from BOP. It does not prove that supervised release ended or that no other custodian holds the person. The sentencing docket and probation record explain obligations that continue after prison.
Confirm a Federal BOP Release
Start with the official BOP Inmate Locator. Search by BOP, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when known. A name search also accepts identity filters. Compare the full result carefully, since common names can return several federal records.
- Search by BOP register number, DCDC number, FBI number, or INS number when one is known.
- For a name search, add age, race, or sex only as needed and compare every returned identity field.
- Read the displayed release date and location. A past date with RELEASED or no BOP facility supports departure from BOP.
- Treat IN TRANSIT as custody movement and UNKNOWN as an unresolved term, not as release proof.
- Check the federal sentencing docket and federal supervision record for legal status after prison.
The locator covers federal prisoners from 1982 forward. It is not a search for USMS pretrial custody, state prison, county jail, or ICE civil detention. A no-result may mean the person never entered BOP, the identifiers are wrong, or the relevant custody belongs to another system.
BOP Release Record Access
The locator is the first public BOP release record, but a fuller agency response may require a federal records request. Identify the person by full name and register number, specify the date range, and ask for the existing designation, movement, release, or sentence-computation record needed. Third-party personal records can require identity, consent, or proof of authority.
Federal BOP Records
Locator: BOP Inmate Locator
Record scope: sentenced federal prison custody from 1982 forward
Request detail: full name, register number, dates, and exact existing record
A locator date is not a certified sentence computation. BOP also warns that First Step Act recalculation can change projected dates. Ask for the record that answers the precise question and expect privacy, security, and law-enforcement redactions where federal law permits them.
Federal Custody Beyond Monroe
No BOP institution is located in Monroe County. A person charged in a Keys-related federal case may first be held for USMS in a local or remote contract bed, then enter BOP only after a federal sentence and designation. The place of arrest does not determine the eventual BOP institution.
USMS and BOP records mark different phases. The federal docket is the durable source for detention, plea, judgment, sentence, and release conditions. BOP supplies the prison locator and prison release date after the sentenced person enters its system.
Read the BOP Release Date
A BOP result shows a federal release date and location field. When the date is past and the location reads RELEASED or no BOP facility is listed, BOP says the person departed its custody. IN TRANSIT indicates movement within federal custody. UNKNOWN can reflect an undetermined confinement term and should not be converted into a release claim.
Projected dates can be recalculated under the First Step Act or after sentence-credit review. Record the access date and avoid promising a gate time. For a completed release, combine the past locator event with the federal docket and, if needed, an official BOP response.
Federal Supervision After Release
Departure from BOP does not establish that the federal sentence and all legal obligations ended. A court may impose supervised release after imprisonment. The judgment and later docket entries identify its term and conditions, while the federal probation office administers the supervision.
A locator entry does not show every supervision event, detainer, or later custody episode. Search the federal docket for a revocation or modification and check the appropriate custodian if another agency may hold the person. Do not call a past BOP date a full discharge unless the governing records support it.
Monroe Transfer to BOP Custody
MCSO's handbook separately refers to USM, Border Patrol, and Customs categories. Historic ICE inspection material also documents immigration detention at the Main jail. That evidence shows why a local release can be a federal or immigration transfer, but it does not establish that any particular contract remains active now.
For a federal pretrial person, inspect the federal court docket because USMS has no public historical release locator. For a sentenced federal prisoner, use the BOP locator after intake. For immigration custody, search ICE ODLS with an A-number and country of birth or exact identity fields. A positive ICE result after an MCSO release means the custodian changed. It does not mean the person had a second community release.
Federal Release Docket Check
Search the federal district-court docket for the detention order, plea, judgment, sentence, commitment, release conditions, and later supervised-release action. A county docket does not substitute for the federal case record. The BOP locator becomes relevant only after the sentenced person enters BOP custody.
Compare the docket's legal dates with the locator's custody date. A judgment date is not the same as BOP intake, and a release order is not proof that another detainer did not apply. When the two sources conflict, seek the BOP movement record and the filed federal order rather than inferring from an MCSO roster change.
BOP Release Date Recalculation
BOP warns that federal release dates can change after First Step Act recalculation. Sentence credits, court amendments, and agency review can affect the public value. A future date is therefore a projection. Record what the locator showed and when it was checked, then verify again near the expected event.
A past date paired with RELEASED or no BOP facility is stronger evidence of departure. It still does not identify every receiving authority or prove the end of supervised release. The federal judgment and later docket supply the legal context that the locator omits.
BOP Release Identity and Status
The locator can be searched with a BOP register number, DCDC number, FBI number, or INS number. Numeric identifiers are safer than a common name. When only a name is known, compare age, race, sex, and every other displayed field without assuming that a similar record is the same person.
Federal custody phases must remain separate. USMS generally manages pretrial detention and transport. BOP manages sentenced prison custody. Federal probation administers supervised release after prison. ICE, Florida, and county systems keep their own records. A person can move between those systems without receiving an unrestricted community release.
BOP locator coverage begins in 1982. An older case or an individual who never entered BOP may not appear. A negative result should send the search back to the federal docket, USMS record route, or another custodian rather than support a claim that the person was released.
BOP Release Record Comparison
Use the locator for the public custody date, the federal docket for the sentence and supervision orders, and a focused federal records request for fuller movement or computation material. Each source answers a different question. Save the register number and exact status label so later checks can be compared reliably.
If MCSO released a person under a federal writ, the county timestamp marks the end of the MCSO transaction. It is not the BOP intake or release date. Allow for designation and transport, then search BOP only when the federal record shows a sentenced prison commitment.
BOP Release Result Meanings
A result must be quoted in BOP terms. RELEASED with a past date means the person left BOP custody. IN TRANSIT means movement, not freedom from custody. UNKNOWN can reflect an unresolved confinement term. No facility alongside a past date supports BOP departure but does not identify later supervision or another hold.
Use the register number to preserve the identity match. Compare any changed date with the federal judgment and agency response. BOP warns that recalculation can occur, so an old saved result should not override the current locator.
For Monroe-related cases, the county arrest or transfer record supplies local context only. The federal docket establishes the sentence, BOP establishes prison custody, and federal probation records address supervised release. Keeping those sources separate avoids turning one agency's release into a claim about every system.
